Sailing and conduct rules
During SAIL 2025, the Harbour Master and Director of Central Nautical Management (CNB) takes decisions on the handling of ships in the North Sea Canal area. The main points of focus are:
- During the SAIL-In (20 August 2025) and the SAIL-Out (24 August 2025), there will be temporary blockage of the lock complex in IJmuiden, the North Sea Canal and the IJ for ships not taking part in the parade.
- During SAIL 2025, additional nautical measures will be declared applicable on the IJ between Mercuriushaven and the Oranjesluizen. To ensure safety, convoy sailing will be offered. When there are large crowds, a speed limit will also apply in this area and there will be sailing and conduct rules for recreational and passenger ships.
- Also, during SAIL 2025, there will be a big day-closing activity organised every evening around 11pm as the day ends. This will attract many ships and boats. The shipping on the IJ will be completely blocked around this time.
Veelgestelde vragen over SAIL 2025
SAIL 2025 will take place from 20 to 24 August 2025. The event will start on Wednesday 20 August 2025 with the SAIL-In Parade of participating Tall Ships through the North Sea Canal towards Amsterdam. Prior to this, the participating ships will walk into IJmuiden. As a finale, after the 5-day SAIL event on and around the IJ, the tallships will sail from Amsterdam back towards the North Sea on Sunday 24 August during the SAIL-Out.
SAIL 2025 is organised by SAIL Amsterdam. SAIL Amsterdam works closely together with partners such as Gemeente Amsterdam, Rijkswaterstaat, the police and Port of Amsterdam. During SAIL 2025, our Harbour Master Division ensures that all shipping traffic, i.e. visiting tall ships, recreational and commercial shipping, is handled safely and smoothly.
SAIL (SAIL Event Partners C.V.) is no longer a subsidiary of Port of Amsterdam.
You can visit SAIL 2025 with your own boat, sloop or ship, but there are (sailing) rules attached to this. More information can be found on the SAIL website.

During SAIL 2025, the Amsterdam port area is busy. During this period, our Harbour Master Division sees to it that all shipping traffic is handled smoothly and safely. To ensure the orderly and safe conduct of the SAIL-In, SAIL 2025 and the SAIL-Out, the Director of Central Nautical Management (CNB) takes decisions that may affect the operation and handling of ships in the North Sea Canal area.
For instance, on 20 and 24 August 2025, there will be a temporary blockage of the lock complex in IJmuiden, on the North Sea Canal and the IJ. The IJ harbour is also blocked throughout the event and the harbour basins are closed to private shipping traffic. During SAIL 2025, additional nautical measures are also applicable on the IJ between Mercuriushaven and Oranjesluizen. To ensure the safety of commercial shipping, convoy shipping will then be offered, a speed limit will apply in this area and there will be rules of conduct to promote the flow.
Other operations and processes can continue as usual, but you may experience disruption and crowding in the port area. More information on the expected disruption will follow later, so keep an eye on our website.

The port of Amsterdam will run as normal during SAIL 2025. At the same time, we expect several companies to consider organising an event on their premises and/or quay during SAIL 2025. Would you and your company like to organise an activity on your terrain during SAIL 2025? Then it is important to coordinate these intended activities in time with the Amsterdam municipality and Port of Amsterdam. Please discuss this with your account manager before 1 January 2025 or report via sail2025@portofamsterdam.com.
To ensure safety in the port, there is a ban on passenger navigation in the port basins. As Port of SAIL Amsterdam, we would like to offer our clients the opportunity to organise a limited number of sailings from their quays in order to experience a beautiful SAIL event together. In a safe way, of course. If you would like to sail in with a passenger ship during SAIL 2025, it is possible to apply for an exemption from Portoffice via our website.
Conditions for an exemption include:
- Don't forget to accredit your ship to the event area via info@sail.nl;
- This is a passenger vessel certified to operate in ‘zone 3’
- The skipper holds a large sailing licence;
- Passenger embarkation and disembarkation takes place in a safe manner;
- Any customer in possession of a quay on its premises can obtain an exemption for up to three cruises during SAIL 2025;
- In locations where the oil port regime applies, it is not possible to get a waiver.
