Annual report 2022: Staying on course
2022 was a turbulent year, also for Port of Amsterdam. The year revolved around the recovery after the pandemic, the war in Ukraine and the worldwide energy crisis it triggered.
Key figures
This is how we further developed in 2022
Clean shipping
In 2025, a shore power facility will be delivered for sea cruise at Cruis Port Amsterdam. Furthermore, we have created the possibility for barges product tanks to degas through a mobile degassing unit at designated public quays. Also, the shore power cabinets for inland shipping has been modernized. Our expectation is to complete the first part of the berths by 2023. We have continued rewarding clean shipping with our Environmental Ship Index and the Green Award in 2022. We have further developed and discussed the sharpened admission policy for sea and river cruise with our stakeholders, which will gradually take effect as of 1 January 2023.
Alternative fuels
There were multiple developments regarding the production and storage of alternative fuels in the Amsterdam port in 2022. The licensing procedure Advanced Methanol Amsterdam (AMS) has been pushed forward and the start of the build of the methanol plant is expected to start in the first half of 2023. Furthermore, the biodiesel manufacturer Greenery announced to increase their production with 25%. Also, Titan and BioValue have announced they will be producing liquid bio methane (LBM, also known as bio LNG) in the Amsterdam port. Lastly, Argent Energy reported they will quintuple their production of their biodiesel plant this year. Port of Amsterdam will take on the build of the new pier and the two docks
Congestion and nitrogen
A big part of the area was confronted with congestion on the electricity grid in 2022. Together with the municipality of Amsterdam, TenneT, and Liander we make up a Taskforce, with which we are working on the reinforcement of the networks. In addition, we are working on an energy coop, to help companies share electricity.
The limited amount of nitrogen allowed also has an effect on the projects and activities in the port. Therefore, the county Noord-Holland has set up a nitrogen bank, with help from the port, to be able to exchange nitrogen areas in the future.
Logistic challenges
A big part of the area was confronted with congestion on the To ensure a future-proof climate for business, it is important that the accessibility of the port is ideal. We have achieved multiple results together with our partners, such as the Rijk, Rijkswaterstaat, the municipality of Amsterdam, and ProRail in 2022. One example of this is the opening of the Zeesluis IJmuiden and the development of the infrastructural Spoorgoederenvisie, which will form the basis when decisions are made regarding spatial planning of the port area in the future.
Green hydrogen
A big part of the area was confronted with congestion on the To ensure a future-proof climate for business, it is important that the Every year, the plans for production, import and use of green hydrogen in the port area become more concrete. For instance, the company HyCC has signed an option agreement to build a 500 MWelektrolyser in 2022. Holhausen has opened a temporary hydrogen filling station on Australiehavenweg and signed the contract for a permanent location in Atlaspark. Furthermore, we are working on the large-scale import of green hydrogen in the Amsterdam port area with H2A, which is a collaboration with Zenith, Evos, Hydrogenious, SkyNRG and Electriq Global, among others.
