Silk Road

The Port of Amsterdam has provided a modern-day version of the ancient Silk Road: a direct railway link between Amsterdam and the Chinese city of Yiwu in the Greater Shanghai Area.

Unique partnership

This railway link represents a unique partnership between the Austrian-based Rail Cargo Group, Netherlands-based Nunner Logistics (a logistics services provider specialising in rail transport), TMA (ACT terminal), Port of Amsterdam and the Chinese government authorities for the Yiwu region.

Direct link to China, three times a week

The train runs from Amsterdam to China three times a week, with the journey taking 16-18 days. This makes the connection faster than by sea and more affordable and sustainable than by air. The new route covers a total length of 11,000 kilometres in railway track and runs from the Chinese mainland to Europe, traversing Mongolia and Russia.

What makes the new Silk Road unique is the fact that it also provides access to the United Kingdom and Scandinavia through short-sea connections, with embarkation points in Amsterdam (TMA).
