Greenergy acquires biodiesel plant in the Port of Amsterdam

29 May 2020

British company Greenergy has acquired the biodiesel plant located in the Port of Amsterdam from the oil storage company Oiltanking.

Situated on the Oiltanking site in the Amerikahaven port, the plant was built in 2010 for the production of biodiesel made from first-generation vegetable oil but has never been operational due to changing market conditions.

Greenergy will be converting the plant in order to be able to produce second-generation biodiesel from fats and waste oils, as well as to increase its capacity.

Greenergy currently operates two large biodiesel plants in Immingham and Teesside in the UK, which the company previously converted from first-generation into second-generation biodiesel plants. This makes Greenergy the largest producer of second-generation biodiesel in Europe.

Oiltanking Amsterdam will provide storage and transhipment services for raw materials and products for Greenergy. The amount of biodiesel produced in the Port of Amsterdam will double once the biodiesel plant becomes operational, marking an important step towards achieving Port of Amsterdam’s objective of further developing both circular activity and cargo flows.
