Meet Karen
Lock keeper
For over two decades, Karen ran a shop selling curtains, cushions, and flooring. "It was a wonderful time, but I started feeling restless…was I really going to do this for the rest of my life?" Then came the pandemic, which acted as a catalyst. "I wanted a career change. And then, during one of my boat trips through the Gouda locks, it suddenly hit me…this is it: I'm going to be a lock keeper!"

"What I love most about the job is the variety of shifts and locks. There's always something happening that keeps you on your toes: cyclists who try to run the red light, leisure boats struggling to moor, seagoing vessels with a tugboat front and back, and people who miss the barrier. It's a never-ending source of excitement and challenge."

As a Port Officer at Port of Amsterdam, you'll navigate the waters of Amsterdam as both a skipper and a supervisor.

Meet Allard
Commercial manager
Allard, a drive commercial manager, guides, advises, and supports port clients. A challenging role with plenty of variety.
"No two days are the same at Port of Amsterdam," says Allard. "One day I'm discussing terminal expansion with a client, the next I'm working on a plan to make the port more sustainable." Flexibility is key: heading from the office to the port and then working from home to finish up the last tasks. "You have a lot of freedom in how and where you work."

What makes this role unique, according to Allard, is its versatility.
"You get to be involved in all aspects of the port sector, from logistics and transport, to energy and the circular economy. This also allows you have a lot of freedom to shape your own work, and your knowledge and skills are valued. What's more, there's a strong sense of teamwork: you'll be working with passionate colleagues on tangible goals with a social impact."

Commercial Project Leader
"My job fits perfectly with my business economics degree. I love numbers, and I'm passionate about understanding the port's supply chains so we can better predict shipping traffic."
